Letter to the readers
Wow !! This edition is very special !!
There is so much going on, so many events
happening to report on in 2004. First and
foremost the wedding of the century between
Prince Felipe de Borbón, and Doña Letizia
Ortiz which took place May 22nd 2004 in the
Royal Palace in Madrid. With 1400 guests
from all over the world and 1.2 billion TV
viewers worldwide it was quite an incredible
event. La Encajera has the details of the
dresses, embroideries and laces from many
of the wedding’s special participants. Don’t
miss the colour photos of the gowns on
pages 24 and 25.
The second important event that has
occurred around here, more specifically
almost in our own backyard - is that Valencia,
Spain, La Encajera’s home town, mind you,
has been selected to host the biggest, most
important sailing event/competition in the
world in 2007, America’s Cup. Valencia was
chosen over several other European coastal
cities. That’s why we feature a lace sailboat
on the cover, more sailboats inside, a
handkerchief with sailboats, and some lace
edging with fish design, a whale and other
lace fish patterns. But don’t just "go fishing,"
take a good look because, guess what? We
are going to let out a little secret - there is a
new lace contest coming up around the time
of the of the America’s Cup. Let your
imagination go and get started early on this
one. A little hint – sailing, boating, sea, or just
about anything related to Valencia. Go for it!!
In every La Encajera edition we are sure
you learn something, but in this issue you will
learn even more, much more. The lace
edging on page 16 is a teaching example to
demonstrate just about everything relating to
torchon style lace - beginning, ending, use of
gimp, different types of stitches in each
square. All this is offered with the diagrams
and complete instructions. I am sure that
many of you will take advantage of this
learning opportunity. It’s a perfect solution for
all of you who don’t have a good lace teacher
nearby.
Also don’t miss the two butterflies on
page 12, one is in a bookmark and the other
butterfly is incorporated in a lace edging or
lace frame.
La Encajera’s response to such difficult
times worldwide is to present a very special
and delicately made Peace Dove, in the hope
that one day we can achieve peace on earth.
See it on page 13 and with more detail on
back cover.
Don’t miss the very special Tulip of
Milanese lace on page 17, which was one of
the pieces that participated in our flower
contest and the article on the lace from
Badajoz, Spain.
Just a quick reminder! Don’t forget to
participate in our Baby Lace Contest! There
is still time, send in your work right away.
Until next issue,
Montserrat Arcos
