Letter to the readers
This is a very special issue since it commemorates the 5th anniversary La Encajera magazine! La Encajera's first issue was published in June of 1997, hard to believe 5 years have passed. We have added eight colour pages to this special issue which is full of laces, instructions and techniques. But we can't sit back and relax and celebrate La Encajera's 5th birthday too much, because we have another very important event coming up very soon - the Third International Lace Event of Javea, Alicante Spain, taking place from October 31st to November 3rd, 2002! We are just as excited as you and we want to tell you all about it in this issue.
We start off by listing and explaining the classes that will be offered. One class sure to arouse curiosity is the very unique technique of working with fine copper and silver wire to make lace. We will tell you more about this on page 6 and 7. The "Punto de Espana" Wire Lace Fan on pages 8 and 9, is an example of this art.
Some other classes include delicate Ret-fi (Catalan Blonde) and Chantilly for lace makers that enjoy working with fine threads and silk, free style lace (we will explain in more detail on page 18, and the ancient stitch of L 'Aquila Italy. You can even learn to make lace without following a pattern and using pins; this technique is called, free hand lace. For those that prefer other techniques the best teacher from the island of Tenerife will come to Javea to pass on her knowledge of the Tenerife Lace "Rosettes". These are some of the laces that are shown and explained in this special anniversary issue.
Many unique laces from the far corners of the world will be exhibited in the town and in the museum. The experts will give conferences about many different techniques. This will be an extraordinary opportunity for lace makers and lace lovers to learn new lace techniques, meet new lace friends while experiencing the peace and tranquility of a beautiful seaside Spanish fishing village. Don't miss this special opportunity! We look forward to seeing you there.
To celebrate our 5th birthday this issue's front cover lace maker is the very same girl that was on the cover of La Encajera issue number 1, but this time she is made entirely in lace. Of course you can make her yourself since the pattern is also included in our pattern supplement.
I'm sure all of you are anxious to know who are the winners of our lace edging contest. Well, I must confess, the task has been most difficult. We received twenty nine pieces from Spain and all over the world. As each piece of lace arrived we felt more unsure of which were the best ones. They are all so well done! They are real works of art as you will be able to judge for yourselves. Three pieces had to be chosen from 29, we just couldn' t choose ony 3, so we decided to have two third prize winners. In this issue we will show you four of the best pieces. In the next issue we will publish many of the other pieces that were received. For me, all of the participants are winners. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you dear friends and congratulations to the winners.
Thank you sincerely for being there faithfully during all this time and continuing your subscriptions to La Encajera magazine. We invite all our readers and friends to celebrate together our 5th anniversary. Mark your calendars and sign up for the class of your choice, the sooner the better.
See you very soon
