Letter to the readers
Very dear reader,
This issue of La Encajera is all about summer. The beautiful lace work of a seascape on the cover shows what the town of Javea is all about ; a magnificent mountain called the Montgo, palm trees, sailboats and the emerald sea that surrounds all this beauty.
Here in Spain not only do we make lace outdoors but we celebrate our lace events in the open air as well. As a result many of us protect ourselves from the hot sun with wide brimmed straw hats. But straw is, well, just straw. How about protecting yourself this summer with a wide brimmed lace hat! In this issue we offer a pattern, so you can make one!
If you spend just an afternoon in Javea, you'll be almost sure to see a sailboat passing by. They are beautiful, inspirational and relaxing, just to watch sail by. But imagine having a real one sitting in your living room! - made of lace of course, see them on page 6.
Also in this issue we introduce you to three generations of lacemakers. Proof that the tradition of lacemaking is here to stay!
We also have a page dedicated to "Images From The Past", and this time we are proud to show you our wonderful lacemakers from the region of Galicia.
On pages 10 and 11 we have some wonderful photos and description of the Santa Lucia Fair which had taken place in Arbos. One of the favorite images of the lacemakers in that region is a famous park fountain in Barcelona, called "La Dama del Paraguas". You can see three fine lace interpretations of this "Lady with Umbrella" on pages 10 and 11.
As always we aim to please you with new ideas and patterns. On pages 12 & 13 you'll see a beautiful edging made for a towel and a lovely initial.
Also don't miss the wonderful photos of the exhibit in Holland where "tiles of lace," were made.
Later in this issue, we talk about the beautiful embroidery from the the island of Mallorca. This fine work has been a product of this island for centuries. We have photos of a few exquisite pieces to share with you - enjoy!
It is a centuries old custom to buy fresh bread every day in Spain. Lots of us here prefer to take along our own cloth bag to tote our daily loaves. But of course an ordinary cloth won't do - we show you how to make a special bread bag with lace edging and lettering.
Also in this issue we show you a lace exhibit from Bisbal del Penedes.
We celebrate Leo birthdays with a special astrological book mark and symbol. See how to make them for that special Leo in your life.
Get dressed up, with the help of pages 28-29, because there you'll find a pretty Russian tape lace collar to wear over your favorite sweater or blouse, along with a couple pairs of lace earrings.
Don't forget about our Fan Making Contest! Remember, by entering your creative work, you can win a wonderful trip to the island of Mallorca, a weekend for two in a five star hotel, a Spanish lace pillow or one of many more prizes.
Another reminder; a very important lace event is coming up, The Second International Lace Event will take place in Javea, Alicante, Spain, October 8th to 15th. In this issue read all about the classes, conferences, special exhibits and excursions to interesting and beautiful places. We highly recommend making your reservation, now, since space is limited. See page 19 and activity section for further information. We look forward to seeing you in Javea this October!!!
